I was looking for something cheap and ukulele-related on ebay. You know, just something fun that announced to the world how much I love my ukuleles and I bumped into this auction:
Yup, that's a Ukulele Hero Decal. That thing would look sweet on yer Ukulele case, right? Or, maybe your guitar case, so the other punk rock kids know that you are secretly rocking the ukulele behind their back. Or.. heck, it'd look sweet on your car, right? Anyway, it's only $2.99 with free shipping!
Has anybody picked one of these up yet? For $49.99 it seems like a pretty great deal, especially considering that you get a gig bag with it as well. snixxx, on Twitter was asking me about it and I told him that I'd do some research.
I'm half-tempted to just buy one and then write about it. I love my Lanikai but I wouldn't mind "seeing other people", as it were. So, if someone can get me interested in this uke, then I'm going to go for it.
Holy smokes, that is a pretty Ukulele! It looks like something that Les Paul would play if he were still with us (and he was rocking a Ukulele). I'm reading the auction notes and it looks like this is a brand new design. That makes sense, because I don't think I've ever seen anything like this. It comes with a custom-made black canvas hardshell case as well. Dang.
The price is really reasonble. You could easily spend $240 on another Ukulele, but I'd be surprised if you could get one as beautiful and as well-made as this little number.
I know I told everyone it was my birthday last week, when I was asking all to buy me the $30,000 Tiple Ukulele. Well.. I was lying. BUT now it really is my birthday. 😉 Gimme this beautiful uke!
So, I was wading through ebay once again and then I got a goofy idea to sort the auctions based on price with the highest price at the top of the list. Before I clicked to sort, I was trying to play a little guessing game with myself as to how high the price of the most expensive item would be. I guessed $4,800. As it turns out, I suck at that particular game because what was at the top was JOHN D'ANGELICO Guitar maker 1930-40's Tiple Ukulele.
Holy crud! $29,999?! Ahh.. wait, though. Free Shipping! So, it balances out, right? Heh. Reading the description of the tiple ukulele, you see that it sounds like the guy doesn't really want to sell it as much as he wants to talk about it. But, that's fine by me because Tiple Ukuleles is something I know very little about. I really do want to get my hands on one, though. A 10-string ukulele?! Why wouldn't you want that.
I've always had questions about how the strings are arranged and the auction answered that question for me:
"This tiple by D'Angelico has the first string doubled in unison, the second and third having three strings with the middle tuned a octive down from the others. and the forth in octave low then high."
Anyway, even if you don't have $30k burning a hole in your pocket, the auction is a good read. Also, if you do have $30k burning a hole in your pocket, did I mention that today is my birthday! 😉 Ok, it isn't really my birthday, but with Thanksgiving coming up, I'm sure you were wondering what you could get for me, right?
So, I was reading a Lou Barlow Interview at Clash Music and I felt like I could share it here. I know this one is stretching it a little bit, but when I read the following, I had to post this:
“In the beginning I thought the scale of the songs I was writing didn't fit with dinosaur - two chord songs written on ukelele. J was composing epics and seemed annoyed by me so I didn't feel comfortable bringing things to him and subjecting myself to ridicule”
Oh man! I would kill to have been a fly on that wall of those old Dinosaur Jr. Practices. Watching Lou Barlow trying to explain to J Mascis how some little ukulele song could totally work. Heh.
